Message from the PTG President:
Dear West Siders,
Spring is quickly approaching and we are set to wrap up many activities before the break.
If you have not already done so, please download and send in your self-nomination form for next year’s PTG Board. Many of our Board members will be exiting this year and we are excited to help the new Board take their place. If you are interested in volunteering but do not wish a Board position, please contact me. There are many open Committee chair positions as well as the honor of being CPC Secretary or representative, SIT Team member, FOCUS Liaison, or SEPTA representative.
The Yearbook is being sold on-line this year so please see the instructions below and order before the April 10 deadline.
The “Soles for Soul” shoe recycling program ends tomorrow 3/31 so gather up your unused shoes and drop them in the bin located in the Airplane wing on your way in to school.
Help the children of P.S. 253 by donating your reading books pre-K to grade 5. This collection will take place until April 11. A bin is located in the Airplane wing or see below for more information on where and how to make donations to this worthy cause. Thank you, Matthew Wright!
Lastly, our largest fund raiser of the year, the Annual WS Run, is coming up on May 18. Please consider being a Business or Family Sponsor. Simply fill out the enclosed form and return to school as directed. Feel free to pass the forms along to any local businesses which you believe may have an interest in sponsorship.
Congratulations to all who participated in the annual WS/LHS 6th grade Get Together. We especially thank our Committee chairperson, Michelle Schneider, on doing such a great job and tip our hats to the parent volunteers as well as the children for their exemplary behavior! A great time was had by all.
Please remember that ELA State testing takes place this week Tuesday through Thursday for children in grades 3-8. It is recommended that you have your child get a good night’s sleep, eat a hearty breakfast and be to school on time during the testing period.
Attention all 5th grade parents!
ELLIS ISLAND REENACTMENT IS FRIDAY, MAY 16
Thank you to the many parents who have responded and expressed interest in participating in this unique event. If you haven’t done so already please contact Jenean Ketterer at Alexandsophiarock@yahoo.com or text 516-780-4964 AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!! We need as much assistance as possible from as many as possible. Please be on the lookout for emails regarding meeting and rehearsal schedules along with other pertinent information.
Looking forward to making this a successful experience for our immigrant children.
Matthew Wright, 5th grader, decided to run a charity book drive to benefit the students of P.S. 253 in Far Rockaway, Queens. The students in this neighborhood are much less fortunate than us and would benefit from this book drive. He picked this school because his soccer coach is a teacher there and experiences their needs first hand each day of the school year. P.S. 253 has 515 students ranging from Pre K – Grade 5. 97% of the students at this school receive free or subsidized lunch and the students are consistently scoring below state passing levels as measured by the State ELA and Math standards. Matthew is sure that there are many old reading books in your homes that your kids no longer need and are cluttering shelves and collecting dust. These books could benefit the students of P.S. 253.
Please donate your unwanted reading books for PreK-5th Grade reading levels.
Matthew has set up a collection bin at the Junior High office, the airplane wing at West Side and there will be a bin for collection on the front porch of his home. Please drop off any books that you would like to donate. If you have a big donation, he can arrange to have the books picked up from your house.
THE COLLECTION WILL END ON FRIDAY, APRIL 11TH!! PLEASE DONATE AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF THESE STUDENTS! Thank you for your time and consideration.
6TH GRADE GET TOGETHER:
Thank you to all the volunteers who stayed at the skating party and helped to make it a very fun & safe event. The kids had a great time!
Regardless of the weather, The West Side Garden Club is getting ready to start their planting. This year, Scarsella’s Nursery is sharing part of their greenhouse with us so the children can get a head start planting their seeds. There will be a donation box in the Airplane wing for clean plastic 5-6 oz. yogurt containers that the children will need for planting. Please donate!
Any questions, please contact Suzi Berg.

WEST SIDE KIDS CARE:
Birthday-in-a-Box – Birthday Wishes believes that every child deserves to be celebrated on his/her birthday. However, this is a luxury for homeless families that neither a shelter nor the family can afford. Last year alone, over 19,000 homeless children experienced the joy of a birthday party provided by this charity. We will be creating BIRTHDAYS-IN-A-BOX which Birthday Wishes will deliver to a birthday child in a safe shelter on Long Island. Party supplies and gifts will be carefully packaged within a wrapped birthday box for each birthday child so that they are able to celebrate their birthday with family and friends.
This month’s BIRTHDAY-IN-A-BOX program will be put together by West Side’s 4th graders for two children — a 10-year-old boy in a sports theme and a 10-year old girl in a fashion party theme. All donations must be collected by Wednesday, April 9th.
HIHI Sandwich Making – The 5th and 6th grade Sandwich Making event will be held in the cafeteria after school on Monday, March 31st. All those who would like to donate and/or participate, please contact Melissa Marasciullo at email@example.com.
Soles 4 Souls – In lieu of our annual sneaker recycling campaign, we will be supporting the High School’s Arts Booster Club in this similar program. We are still saving our landfills while raising money for our schools at the same time! A donation box will be located in the Airplane wing throughout the month of March. Shoes in pairs only. No slippers, flip flops, ice skates, roller blades, rubber boots or winter boots please.
West Side Food Pantry – A delivery was made to the Tri-CYA in Huntington Station this week. They are grateful for our donations so please keep them coming!
