Message from the PTG President:
Dear West Side Families,
The author, Sherry Anderson wrote, “Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless.” I wanted to take a moment to thank each and every one of you who have helped, in any way, to make this year easier for all. For many different reasons we have seen a decline in volunteers yet I have also witnessed many who have risen to the challenge, and are helping in numerous ways, to continue the legacy and tradition that is the West Side experience for our children! Thank you to Fara Safaii for chairing the Banking Committee, Bari Corbin for joining the Board as VP of Communications and to Iris Vardy for chairing the Yearbook Committee! We are still in need of chairs or co-chairs for our Holiday Boutique and Cultural Arts Committees. Please, if you are able and willing to chair any one of these committees, contact Ana Shammah ana18@verizon.net
It was so wonderful to see so many West Side Moms at this month’s CPC meeting. West Side represented almost half of the audience in attendance at that meeting. Amazing!
Our children had a special assembly with a visit from Senator Carl Marcellino this Tuesday. The Senator was very impressed by the letters written to him by the children. He thanked them for all their hard work and told them to thank their mommies and daddies for providing them the opportunity to live and learn in such a great community!
We are almost at our goal of 200 tickets for the WS WIN with over two-thirds of our families participating in the purchase of raffle tickets! The Cocktail party promises to be a wonderful evening!
Please remember to come join us for our Book Fair which will be taking place on October 24 and 25. If you have time, the National Geographic Giant Traveling Map of North America will be at the school from October 28-November 15. Stop in and take a peek.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at the WIN!!!!
Warmly,
Lolita

WS WIN:
Our West Side Win raffle drawing will be held today and the winners will be announced at our annual West Side Win cocktail party tonight! Please remember to park on the south side of Saw Mill Road or on Coleman Court. Bring a flashlight for safety. We hope to see you there!
STUDENT COUNCIL:
We are having an Eyeglass Drive and a Halloween Costume Drive. Students can bring in old eyeglasses that are no longer being used and/or gently used costumes. Both items will be donated to groups that are in need and that cannot afford to purchase them on their own. We are accepting donations up until Halloween.
WS BOOK FAIR:
The book fair is coming! Mark your calendars for October 24th from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM with a family time from 3:00 PM-5:00 PM and October 25th 9:00 AM-2:00 PM. Class times will be sent home soon. Come and shop with your child for a selection of the hottest books and new releases! Interested in working at the fair? Contact Nicole Pultz (Pultz3@optinline.net) or Jill Demarco (jed1273@yahoo.com) for more information.
HALLOWEEN DANCE:
Our annual Halloween Dance will be held on Friday November 1, 2013 from 5:30-7:00 PM.
Please come dressed in your Halloween costume and bring a canned good donation for the Food Pantry. We will also be collecting excess Halloween candy for the troops.
This is NOT a drop off event. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Siblings are welcome.
We are looking for volunteers to help with set up, clean up and to chaperone. Please contact Sierra Mittleman (sierramittleman@gmail.com) if you would like to volunteer.
Thank you, Elise Jusko
WEST SIDE KIDS CARE:
A great big thank you to Sarah Lynch who introduced our Annual Winter Coat Drive at morning assembly on Tuesday with a sad but true story about a little girl named Isabel who showed up at the Helping Hands Rescue Mission with a runny nose and a sweatshirt. The kids were amazed that ten minutes from home, families could not afford coats to keep their kids warm. Thanks to the generosity of families at West Side and others like you, Isabel got a pink coat with matching gloves and felt not only warm but also like a princess. Thanks to Caroline DiMaio, Michael Gallagher, Annie Celestino, Lauren Maggiore, Molly McHale, Michael Tighe, Alex Pultz, Sophie Cohen, Helena Boutis, and Sarah Lynch for making posters during recess to spread the word of the coat drive. A donation box will be in the airplane lobby through Friday, October 25th for coats, hats, gloves/mittens and scarfs of any size. Please make sure all donations are clean! All are invited to help sort the donations in the Community Room after school on the 25th. Thanks for giving warmth! Please keep the donations to the West Side Food Pantry coming! The children and families of the Tri-Community and Youth Agency’s after-school program in Huntington Station appreciate your help! If anyone has any questions or ideas for WSKC, or would like to volunteer for any events (very minimal time commitment required – 1-2 hours), please contact Dana Lynch at dana@theblacktop.net.
